That’s why I am writing down some essential information here so that you can save yourself from future additional expenses when taking hosting.

What is Hosting (Hosting)?

If you don’t know what hosting is, you can easily understand it with an example of a memory card. Just as a memory card works in your phone to store all kinds of content like text files, PDFs, your videos, and photos, similarly hosting stores all the content of your website, including text, PDFs, videos uploaded on your website, and photos as well as the website’s coding.

I hope you have understood the definition of hosting easily with this example.

Just like a memory card cannot replace a laptop or desktop hard disk, hosting also has its own place. If you consider the example of a hard disk in a laptop or desktop, you can easily understand hosting technology. Just as a laptop or desktop has a hard disk, similarly, hosting is for a website; the only difference being that the hard disk in a laptop or desktop is physically inside it, while hosting is available on a server that can be accessed via a web browser to view a website.

For now, just understand that whenever you need to upload any content online for your website, all that content will be hosted through hosting and saved on the hosting server. Different types of hosting require different types of payments. In simple terms, the more you pay, the better hosting you get.

However, it’s not true. If you are starting a business on a small scale or entering the world of new online businesses, it is beneficial to start with hosting plans at a smaller level. As your business grows, you can invest in different website and hosting plans accordingly. Below are some important points to keep in mind:

1. You may come across many offers for free hosting plans in the market, but be cautious as free services are often limited, and hosting companies aim to convert you into their customer. Once a website is built on one hosting, migrating it to another can be as time-consuming as creating a new site. Also, transferring large-sized databases during website migration can be a cumbersome process.

2. The website would need to be completely shut down during the database shift, which can negatively impact your online business.

3. Customers visiting your closed website might lose trust in your business, potentially affecting your future transactions and credibility.

4. Website traffic may also be affected, leading to negative SEO impacts.

5. Marketing efforts and expenses could go in vain if visitors see a closed website and leave, causing losses.

These are minor points that are often overlooked, as people tend to be attracted by the term “free”. However, with the information in this blog and your personal experiences shared here, you may differentiate between right and wrong more effectively.

When purchasing hosting, you should pay to several factors, technical and general considerations. Here are some key points to keep in mind when buying hosting:

1 First and foremost, assess the needs of your business. If your business is small or just starting out, you should consider shared, WordPress hosting, or cloud hosting.

Every website hosting service offers different plans with varying features, some with more enhancements while others with fewer.

  1. Pay attention to the amount of storage you are getting with the hosting package.
  2. When buying hosting, consider how much traffic your website can handle at a given time or the number of users that can access your website simultaneously. Failure to do so may lead to frequent server downtime issues, ultimately resulting in your website being inaccessible. Bandwidth features should also be taken into consideration.
  3. Consider the amount of RAM included in the hosting package. More RAM signifies better hosting services. Shared hosting plans typically do not provide RAM features.
  4. Security – Many individuals work online but often overlook security concerns, leaving them vulnerable to hacking issues. Therefore, in addition to website hosting, focus on security features provided with the hosting service. Dedicated IP hosting is considered more secure than other web hosting options, whereas shared hosting typically offers limited security features. Additionally, firewall, malware scanner, and name server security features are significant.
  5. Video Hosting – If your website content includes videos, consider purchasing separate video hosting to ensure fast loading times and prevent your website server from going down. Hosting resources can become a bottleneck, slowing down the processing of other content on your site. If you are creating a website related to education or teaching, you may need to purchase video hosting separately.
  6. Server Data Center – The location of the server hosting your website can impact its performance. If your customers are from India, and your hosting company provides hosting services from servers located in the USA, your website may take slightly longer to load for Indian customers due to the physical distance. This delay can range from milliseconds to a few minutes, depending on your hosting plan. Servers located overseas usually offer cheaper hosting rates from US servers.
  7. Auto Backup feature – Check if your hosting service includes an auto backup feature, enabling you to restore your website to a previous date in case it gets infected with viruses.

Which hosting should you buy?

If you pay attention to all the things mentioned above before purchasing hosting, you can buy good hosting. However, it is not necessary that you will find all the features in one place, and getting all features may increase the cost of your hosting. Therefore, if your business is small, you can consider shared hosting or WordPress hosting. If your budget is good, then do not go for hosting below cloud hosting.

Buy a VPS hosting plan only when you are proficient in coding or have someone knowledgeable to manage it. If you buy dedicated hosting, you will get more security compared to shared hosting because in shared hosting, your hosting is shared with others, and if their website gets infected with a virus, it can spread to your website as well. This means everyone may have to suffer due to one person’s mistake.
